History.
The Heinkel He 111 H-22 was a late-war variant of Germany’s famous He 111 medium bomber, adapted in 1944 to carry and launch the V-1 flying bomb (Fieseler Fi 103). As Allied bombing made fixed V-1 launch ramps in France increasingly vulnerable, the Luftwaffe sought an air-launched alternative. The H-22 was modified with strengthened wings, release gear under the starboard wing, and navigational equipment for long over-water flights. From bases in northern Germany and the Netherlands, He 111 H-22s launched V-1s against targets in southern England, mainly London and coastal cities. Although the system extended the V-1 campaign, it suffered heavy losses to Allied fighters and radar-directed defences, limiting its overall effectiveness.
