History.
The U-96 was a German Type VIIC U-boat of the Kriegsmarine during the Second World War. Commissioned in September 1940 under Kapitänleutnant Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock, it became one of the most famous U-boats of the war due to its successful patrols and later portrayal in the book and film Das Boot.
The Type VIIC class was the workhorse of the German U-boat fleet—measuring about 67 metres in length, displacing around 760 tonnes surfaced, and capable of diving to depths of up to 230 metres. U-96 carried 14 torpedoes and was armed with deck guns for surface combat.
Over the course of 11 patrols, U-96 sank 27 Allied ships and damaged several others, operating primarily in the North Atlantic during the height of the Battle of the Atlantic. After an active career, it was withdrawn from combat for training duties and was ultimately destroyed in an air raid at Wilhelmshaven in March 1945.
U-96 remains a symbol of the perilous and gruelling life faced by U-boat crews during the war.
