History.

In Top Gun, the aircraft carrier featured is USS Enterprise (CV-65), the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. Commissioned in 1961, she was instantly recognisable by her distinctive island superstructure and vast flight deck. In the film, Enterprise serves as the operational base for Maverick and his fellow naval aviators, launching F-14A Tomcats into high-speed training exercises and tense intercept missions. Her nuclear propulsion allowed sustained high-speed operations without refuelling, symbolising American naval reach during the Cold War. The dramatic catapult launches and arrested landings filmed aboard Enterprise gave the movie authenticity, placing viewers directly on the pitching deck of a real frontline carrier at sea.
