History.

The Flakpanzer IV Wirbelwind was a German self-propelled anti-aircraft gun developed during World War II. Built on the chassis of the Panzer IV tank, it emerged in response to the increasing threat posed by Allied air superiority. Development began in 1944, led by the need for a mobile air defense system capable of protecting armoured formations and infantry from low-flying aircraft.

The Wirbelwind was equipped with a quadruple 2 cm Flakvierling 38 anti-aircraft gun, housed in an open-top, nine-sided turret. This setup allowed for rapid, 360-degree firing, making it effective against aircraft and light ground targets. The vehicle's production started in late 1944, with around 100 units built by the end of the war.

Despite its late introduction and limited numbers, the Wirbelwind played a crucial role in providing air cover for German ground forces. Its design influenced post-war development of self-propelled anti-aircraft systems, highlighting its significance in military engineering. Today, surviving examples are displayed in military museums, representing a unique aspect of armoured warfare history.
