History

The DRB Class 52 steam locomotive, a cornerstone of German railway operations during World War II, was developed as a wartime variant of the Class 50 to address the need for robust, cost-effective rail transport. Introduced in 1942, over 6,300 units were produced, making it one of the most numerous steam locomotive classes. Its design emphasised simplicity and durability, featuring a 2-10-0 wheel arrangement and a coal wagon for extended range and efficiency. These locomotives were essential in transporting troops, equipment, and supplies across Europe, especially on the Eastern Front. Despite their utilitarian purpose, the Class 52s proved reliable and continued in service long after the war, with many repurposed in various European countries. Their legacy is preserved in numerous railway museums, highlighting their role in wartime logistics and post-war reconstruction.
