History.
The MiG-28 is a fictional aircraft featured in the 1986 film *Top Gun*. Contrary to its portrayal, no such aircraft exists in real life. The "MiG-28" was depicted as a Soviet fighter jet, representing an adversary in the iconic dogfight scenes. In reality, the aircraft used in the film to portray the MiG-28 was the Northrop F-5, a supersonic light fighter widely used by the United States for both training and as an aggressor aircraft in military exercises.
The decision to name the aircraft "MiG-28" was purely creative, aligning with Cold War tensions and the perception of Soviet technology as a formidable opponent. The use of the F-5 to represent this fictional enemy was due to its compact design and agility, making it a suitable stand-in for a hypothetical Soviet fighter. The MiG-28, despite being fictional, has since become a memorable part of aviation and film history.
