History.
Space Shuttle Atlantis (Orbiter Vehicle designation: OV‑104) is one of NASA's most storied orbiters, with a rich history spanning 26 years. Constructed beginning in 1980 and completed in 1985, Atlantis embarked on its maiden flight, STS-51-J, on October 3, 1985. This mission marked the start of a distinguished career in space exploration.
Atlantis undertook 33 missions, contributing significantly to the construction of the International Space Station (ISS) and the deployment of interplanetary probes. Notably, it launched the Magellan probe to Venus and the Galileo probe to Jupiter. Atlantis also played a crucial role in the first Shuttle-Mir docking, fostering international cooperation in space.
In 2009, Atlantis was pivotal in the final servicing mission (STS-125) to the Hubble Space Telescope, extending the telescope's operational life and enhancing its capabilities. This mission showcased the shuttle's versatility and the crew's technical expertise.
Atlantis's final flight, STS-135, launched on July 8, 2011, marking the end of the Space Shuttle Programme. The mission delivered essential supplies and equipment to the ISS, underscoring the shuttle's role in sustaining human presence in space.
Post-retirement, Atlantis is displayed at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida. Its legacy endures as a symbol of human ingenuity and perseverance in space exploration, inspiring future generations to reach for the stars. The shuttle's contributions to science, international cooperation, and technological advancement remain integral to the history of space exploration.
