History.
The Somua S-35 was a French cavalry tank developed in the 1930s and regarded as one of the most advanced tanks of its time. Designed by the Société d'Outillage Mécanique et d'Usinage d'Artillerie (SOMUA), the S-35 was intended to support French armoured divisions with speed and firepower. Introduced in 1936, it featured a 47 mm SA 35 gun, superior to many contemporary tanks, and thick cast armour, offering significant protection.
Despite these strengths, the S-35 had a few shortcomings, such as a one-man turret, which placed a heavy burden on the commander. The tank saw extensive service during the Battle of France in 1940, where it proved effective against German armour. However, France's rapid defeat limited its long-term impact. After the fall of France, many S-35s were captured and used by German forces. The tank remains a symbol of French innovation and resilience during a challenging period.
