History
The Panzer III Ausf. H, introduced in 1940, marked an important stage in the evolution of Germany’s standard medium tank. Earlier Panzer III models had struggled with thin armour and modest firepower, so the Ausf. H was redesigned to survive against increasingly capable Allied anti-tank weapons. Armour protection was increased to roughly 50 mm, and an improved suspension system allowed the tank to carry extra weight without sacrificing mobility.
Armed with the 5 cm KwK 38 L/42 gun, the Ausf. H was well suited to infantry support and armoured manoeuvre warfare during the early campaigns in the Balkans and the Soviet Union. However, as Soviet T-34s and KV-series tanks appeared, the Panzer III soon reached its limits and was gradually supplanted by more powerful variants and the Panzer IV.
