History.

HMS Belfast, a Town-class light cruiser of the Royal Navy, was launched on March 17, 1938, and played a significant role during World War II and beyond. Commissioned in August 1939, Belfast saw early action in the Battle of the North Cape in 1943, where she helped sink the German battleship Scharnhorst. She was heavily involved in the Arctic convoys, providing essential support to Allied merchant ships delivering supplies to the Soviet Union.

In June 1944, Belfast participated in Operation Overlord, the D-Day landings, providing naval gunfire support for the Allied invasion of Normandy. Post-war, she served in the Korean War from 1950 to 1952, further establishing her legacy.

Decommissioned in 1963, HMS Belfast was saved from scrapping and opened to the public as a museum ship on the River Thames in 1971. As part of the Imperial War Museums, she offers a tangible connection to naval history and the experiences of those who served aboard her.
