History.
HMHS *Britannic* was the third and largest of the Olympic-class ocean liners built by Harland and Wolff for the White Star Line. Originally intended to serve as a passenger ship like her sister ships, *RMS Olympic* and *RMS Titanic*, *Britannic* was launched on 26 February 1914. However, due to the outbreak of the First World War, she was requisitioned by the British government before her maiden voyage and converted into a hospital ship.
Renamed His Majesty’s Hospital Ship (*HMHS Britannic*), she served in the Mediterranean, transporting wounded soldiers back to Britain. On 21 November 1916, while passing through the Kea Channel in the Aegean Sea, *Britannic* struck a German naval mine and sank within 55 minutes. Remarkably, only 30 lives were lost, thanks in part to improvements made following the *Titanic* disaster. Today, *Britannic* remains the largest ship lost during World War I and lies at the bottom of the Aegean Sea.
