History
The Fujian is China’s third aircraft carrier and the first to be fully designed and built domestically. Launched in June 2022, it marks a significant advancement in the Chinese Navy's capabilities. Named after the coastal province opposite Taiwan, the Fujian represents a shift towards more modern naval power projection. Unlike its predecessors, Liaoning and Shandong, which used ski-jump ramps, the Fujian is equipped with an electromagnetic catapult launch system, similar to the latest American carriers. This allows it to launch heavier aircraft with greater efficiency. Still undergoing sea trials as of 2025, the Fujian is expected to play a central role in China's ambitions to develop a blue-water navy. It symbolises the nation’s growing confidence and technological progress in maritime defence.
