History
The F-14 Tomcat was a supersonic, twin-engine fighter aircraft developed by Grumman for the United States Navy. It first flew in 1970 and entered service in 1974, designed to replace the ageing F-4 Phantom II. The F-14 featured variable-sweep wings, allowing excellent performance at both low and high speeds. It was primarily used for fleet air defence, equipped with long-range AIM-54 Phoenix missiles. The aircraft gained worldwide fame after its prominent role in the 1986 film Top Gun. Although it never served in the Royal Navy, it was admired internationally for its sleek design and powerful capabilities. The U.S. Navy retired the F-14 in 2006, replacing it with the F/A-18 Super Hornet. Iran remains the only other operator of the F-14 today.
