History.
The Pennsylvania-class battleships, comprising USS Pennsylvania (BB-38) and USS Arizona (BB-39), were a significant class of super-dreadnought battleships built for the United States Navy in the early 20th century. Launched in 1915 and 1916 respectively, these ships were designed to enhance the U.S. Navy's capabilities with improved speed, armour, and firepower. Each vessel featured twelve 14-inch guns in triple turrets, advanced armour protection, and oil-fired boilers, marking a technological leap from their predecessors.
The Pennsylvania-class ships served prominently during World War II. USS Pennsylvania was the flagship of the Pacific Fleet during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour on December 7, 1941, suffering damage but remaining afloat. Conversely, USS Arizona was tragically sunk during the same attack, resulting in a massive loss of life and becoming a poignant symbol of the conflict.
Throughout the war, USS Pennsylvania supported numerous Pacific operations, including the Battle of Leyte Gulf and the bombardments of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Post-war, the ship was used in atomic testing before being decommissioned. The legacy of the Pennsylvania-class battleships is indelibly marked by their contributions to naval warfare and the enduring memorial of the USS Arizona.
