History.
The Beechcraft T-6 Texan II entered service with the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) in 2014, replacing the ageing PAC CT-4E Airtrainer. Based at RNZAF Base Ohakea, these turboprop trainers are used for pilot training under the Aircrew Training Capability (ATC) programme.
The aircraft, a modernised version of the original T-6 Texan, features glass cockpit avionics, advanced navigation systems, and a Pratt & Whitney PT6A-68 turboprop engine, allowing speeds of up to 320 mph. The RNZAF operates 11 T-6 Texan IIs, providing basic and advanced flight training before pilots transition to larger aircraft.
With improved performance, safety, and training capabilities, the T-6 Texan II plays a crucial role in preparing New Zealand’s next generation of military aviators.
