History.
The North American B-25 Mitchell became famous for its role in the daring Tokyo Raid of 18 April 1942. Led by Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle, sixteen specially modified bombers took off from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet, an extraordinary feat for land-based aircraft. Their targets included military and industrial sites in Tokyo and other Japanese cities. Although the raid caused limited physical damage, its psychological impact was considerable. It raised Allied morale after months of setbacks and demonstrated that Japan was vulnerable to attack. Most crews crash-landed in China, while one aircraft reached the Soviet Union. The mission became legendary worldwide.
