History.
The Avro Lancaster Mk I 'G for George' (serial W4783, squadron code AR-G) is one of World War II’s most legendary heavy bombers. Flown by No. 460 Squadron RAAF, this iconic aircraft completed 90 combat missions over occupied Europe between October 1942 and April 1944—a remarkable survival record during RAF Bomber Command’s deadliest operational period.

Manned by 29 different Australian and Commonwealth crews, 'George' repeatedly returned home despite heavy flak damage and night-fighter attacks. After retiring from combat, the aircraft was flown to Australia in late 1944 to promote War Bonds. Today, fully restored, it stands as a permanent center-stage tribute to Australian aircrews in the Anzac Hall at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
