History

During the Second World War, German beach defences formed part of the extensive Atlantic Wall, a vast network of fortifications built along the western coast of Europe to repel an Allied invasion. On the beaches, the Germans installed a range of obstacles, including steel anti-tank hedgehogs, wooden stakes, mines, and barbed wire, designed to damage landing craft and slow advancing troops. Bunkers and pillboxes, often constructed from reinforced concrete, housed machine guns, artillery, and observation posts, offering strong defensive positions with clear fields of fire. Many positions were also protected by trenches and mortar pits. These defences were especially prominent in Normandy, where they posed a significant challenge to Allied forces on D-Day, 6 June 1944, although ultimately they were overcome.
