History
Amphibious vehicles have a long and varied history, with early concepts dating back to the 18th century. However, practical development gained momentum during the 20th century, particularly in wartime. In the Second World War, amphibious vehicles such as the American DUKW and the British Terrapin played crucial roles in beach landings and river crossings, allowing troops and supplies to move seamlessly between land and water. These vehicles combined wheels or tracks with watertight hulls and propellers or water jets for propulsion. Post-war, military forces continued to refine amphibious designs, while civilian versions emerged for exploration, rescue, and tourism. Today, amphibious technology remains important for rapid deployment, disaster response, and operations in diverse and challenging environments across the globe.
