History

The Sopwith Camel was a British First World War biplane fighter, introduced in 1917 by the Sopwith Aviation Company. Renowned for its agility and firepower, it quickly became one of the most successful Allied aircraft of the war. Powered by a rotary engine and armed with twin synchronised machine guns, the Camel earned its name from the distinctive hump-shaped covering over the guns. It was tricky to fly, with sensitive controls and a strong gyroscopic effect, but in the hands of an experienced pilot, it was deadly. The Camel was credited with shooting down more enemy aircraft than any other Allied fighter. It played a crucial role in establishing air superiority and supporting ground operations during the later stages of the war.
