History.

The Nieuport 17 C.1 was a French biplane fighter introduced in 1916 during the First World War. Designed by Gustave Delage, it was a significant improvement over earlier Nieuport models, featuring a more powerful engine, improved manoeuvrability, and excellent climb rate. The aircraft quickly gained a reputation for its agility, becoming a favourite among Allied aces such as Albert Ball and Charles Nungesser.

Its distinctive sesquiplane design—where the lower wing was much smaller—gave it a light, responsive feel, although it was prone to structural issues in steep dives. The Nieuport 17 was adopted not only by France but also by Britain, Belgium, Russia, and Italy. Its performance forced Germany to develop more advanced fighters in response, making the Nieuport 17 a key player in early aerial combat history.
