History.

The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter, a supersonic interceptor, saw limited combat use during the Vietnam War. Originally designed for high-speed, high-altitude interceptions, it was less suited to the low-level ground attack and counterinsurgency missions prevalent in Vietnam. The U.S. Air Force deployed the F-104C to Southeast Asia between 1965 and 1967 primarily for MiG combat air patrols and escort missions. Although it saw little direct air-to-air combat, it played a deterrent role and protected strike aircraft. Mechanical reliability issues, limited range, and poor maneuverability at low speeds led to its replacement by more versatile fighters like the F-4 Phantom II. Despite its short Vietnam service, the Starfighter remained in use by allied nations for decades due to its speed and climb rate.
