History.
The Deutsche Reichsbahn BR 03 was a prominent steam locomotive in Germany, introduced in the 1930s to support high-speed passenger services. Designed as a streamlined express locomotive, the BR 03 featured a 4-6-2 wheel arrangement, ideal for the high-speed, long-distance routes of the time. Unlike its heavier predecessor, the BR 01, the BR 03 was lighter and more cost-effective, making it suitable for tracks with lower axle load capacities. Its design allowed speeds up to 130 km/h, cementing its role in intercity and express services.
Water cranes, essential for refilling locomotives like the BR 03, were positioned along railway stations. They allowed rapid refuelling of steam engines, vital for continuous, long-haul services. Together, the BR 03 and water cranes were integral to German railway efficiency in the pre-war and wartime periods.
