History.
The M24 Chaffee was an American light tank used during the later stages of World War II. Introduced in 1944, it was named after General Adna R. Chaffee Jr., an early advocate for the use of tanks in the U.S. Army. The M24 Chaffee was designed to replace the M5 Stuart, which was found to be under-armoured and under-gunned against German armour.
The Chaffee featured a 75mm gun, offering significantly improved firepower, while maintaining good mobility due to its lightweight design. It was powered by two Cadillac V8 engines, which provided a smooth and reliable performance.
The tank saw action in Europe and the Pacific, proving effective in reconnaissance roles and against light armour. After the war, the M24 Chaffee remained in service with numerous countries and was used in subsequent conflicts, including the Korean War, solidifying its place as a significant light tank in military history.
