History.
The Roman Auxilia were non-citizen troops who served alongside the Roman legions, playing a vital role in the expansion and defence of the Roman Empire. Established formally under Emperor Augustus, the Auxilia provided specialist skills the legions lacked—such as cavalry, archers, and slingers. Recruited from across the empire, including Gaul, Britain, Syria, and Numidia, auxiliaries served for 25 years, after which they were granted Roman citizenship as a reward. Unlike legionaries, who were all Roman citizens, auxiliaries were often more culturally diverse and adaptable to different terrains and warfare styles. Their presence helped Romanise frontier regions, and by the 2nd century CE, the Auxilia numbered nearly as many as the legions. They were crucial to Rome’s military success and cultural integration.
