History.
The Celtic warriors were fierce and skilled fighters who dominated much of Europe from around 500 BCE to 100 CE. Renowned for their bravery, they often fought naked or with minimal armour to demonstrate fearlessness. They wielded iron swords, spears, and carried distinctive oval or round shields, often richly decorated. Celtic society was tribal, with warriors owing allegiance to local chieftains or kings. Battle was seen not just as a means of conquest but as a display of honour and prowess. Many Celtic warriors painted themselves with woad, a blue dye, to intimidate enemies. Despite their reputation, they were eventually subdued by the expanding Roman Empire, though their legacy of valour and resistance remains deeply rooted in British and European folklore.
