History

The Tupolev Tu-2 was a Soviet twin-engine bomber developed during the Second World War. Designed by Andrei Tupolev's team while he was imprisoned during Stalin’s purges, the aircraft was intended to rival Western medium bombers. It first flew in 1941 and entered service in 1942, proving highly effective in tactical bombing roles. The Tu-2 was fast, well-armed, and could carry a substantial bomb load, making it a valuable asset on the Eastern Front. It participated in numerous key battles, including the Battle of Kursk. After the war, the Tu-2 remained in service through the late 1950s and was exported to several Eastern Bloc nations. Its success helped restore Tupolev’s reputation and secured his release from prison.
