History
During the Battle of Budapest (1944–1945), German and Hungarian forces deployed various armoured vehicles, including tank destroyers, to resist the advancing Soviet Red Army. Among the most notable was the German Jagdpanzer 38(t) Hetzer, a low-profile, well-armoured tank destroyer equipped with a powerful 75mm gun. Designed for ambush tactics, it proved effective in the narrow urban streets of Budapest. The larger Jagdpanther and StuG III were also used, offering heavy firepower against Soviet armour. Despite their capabilities, the tank destroyers were ultimately overwhelmed by superior Soviet numbers and constant artillery bombardment. The Battle of Budapest became one of the war’s most destructive urban conflicts, with tank destroyers playing a key defensive role before the city fell to Soviet forces in February 1945.
