History

The Supermarine Spitfire is one of Britain’s most iconic fighter aircraft, renowned for its role in World War II. Designed by R.J. Mitchell in the 1930s, the Spitfire first flew in 1936 and entered service with the Royal Air Force in 1938. With its sleek, elliptical wings and powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, it offered exceptional speed, agility, and performance. The Spitfire became legendary during the Battle of Britain in 1940, where it, alongside the Hawker Hurricane, defended the UK against the German Luftwaffe. Continually improved throughout the war, the Spitfire served in numerous roles, including reconnaissance and ground-attack. Over 20,000 were built. Its graceful design and wartime legacy have made the Spitfire a lasting symbol of British courage and engineering excellence.
