History
The Sd.Kfz. 251 half-track, developed by Germany during the Second World War, served primarily as an armoured personnel carrier. A notable variant was the Sd.Kfz. 251/9, which mounted a 75mm gun for infantry support. However, a configuration featuring the 10.5 cm leFH18 howitzer — sometimes seen mounted on Sd.Kfz. 251 chassis — was experimental and rare. This combination, often improvised in the field or trialled in limited numbers, aimed to provide mobile artillery firepower with greater tactical flexibility. These adaptations were not officially designated as standard models but reflected the Wehrmacht’s improvisational efforts late in the war. Though never widespread, the half-track and cannon pairing symbolised German attempts to bolster fire support as armoured units faced increasing Allied pressure on all fronts.
