History
The Leopard 2A5 is an advanced variant of the German Leopard 2 main battle tank, developed by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann. Introduced in the mid-1990s, the 2A5 marked a significant upgrade over earlier models, focusing on improved protection and combat efficiency. It featured wedge-shaped add-on armour to better deflect enemy fire, particularly from shaped-charge warheads, and upgraded internal systems, including a digital fire-control system and improved gun stabilisation. The 2A5 retained the powerful 120mm Rheinmetall smoothbore gun and high mobility of the Leopard 2 platform. It was developed in response to evolving battlefield threats and lessons learned during the Cold War. The Leopard 2A5 served as a foundation for later variants, such as the Leopard 2A6 and 2A7, widely respected for their performance.
