History
The Vought F4U Corsair was a powerful American carrier-based fighter aircraft used during the Second World War and the Korean War. First flown in 1940, it was notable for its distinctive inverted gull wings and powerful Pratt & Whitney engine, giving it excellent speed and climb performance. Initially difficult to land on aircraft carriers, it was first used by the U.S. Marine Corps from land bases. Once carrier landing issues were resolved, it became a dominant naval fighter. The F4U excelled in both air-to-air combat and ground attack roles, particularly in the Pacific Theatre. It earned a formidable reputation against Japanese aircraft and was respected by both allies and enemies. Production continued until 1953, with over 12,000 units built in total.
