History

The Bismarck was a German battleship built for the Kriegsmarine in the late 1930s. Launched in 1939, it was one of the largest and most powerful warships of its time. Named after Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, the ship symbolised Nazi Germany’s naval ambition. In May 1941, the Bismarck embarked on its first and only mission, aiming to disrupt Allied shipping in the Atlantic. It sank HMS Hood, the pride of the Royal Navy, but was heavily damaged in return. Following an intense pursuit, British forces finally disabled and sank the Bismarck on 27 May 1941. Over 2,000 German sailors perished. The Bismarck's brief but dramatic career made it a legendary figure in naval warfare history and maritime folklore.
