History

The Battle of Stalingrad, fought between August 1942 and February 1943, was one of the most significant and brutal confrontations of the Second World War. Located on the banks of the Volga River, Stalingrad was a key industrial city. The German Sixth Army, under General Paulus, launched a massive offensive to capture it, aiming to secure vital oil fields in the Caucasus. Fierce Soviet resistance, combined with harsh winter conditions and a successful counter-offensive by the Red Army, led to the encirclement and eventual surrender of over 90,000 German troops. The battle marked a turning point in the war on the Eastern Front, halting the German advance and beginning a sustained Soviet push westward. Casualties on both sides were immense.
