History.
The Tirpitz was a German battleship of the Bismarck class, launched in 1939 and commissioned in 1941. Sister ship to the famous Bismarck, she was the largest battleship ever built by Germany and one of the heaviest in Europe, displacing over 42,000 tons. Armed with eight 15-inch (38 cm) guns, she posed a major threat to Allied convoys in the North Atlantic and Arctic. Stationed mainly in Norwegian fjords, the Tirpitz became known as the “Lonely Queen of the North.” Although she rarely engaged in direct battle, her presence tied down significant Allied naval resources. After multiple sabotage and bombing attempts, she was finally sunk by British Royal Air Force Lancasters using Tallboy bombs in November 1944.
