History.
The USS Missouri (BB-63), also known as "Mighty Mo," is one of the most famous battleships in American naval history. Commissioned in 1944, it was the last battleship built by the United States. The Missouri played a significant role in the final stages of World War II, notably being the site where Japan formally surrendered to the Allies on September 2, 1945, in Tokyo Bay, marking the end of the war.
During its service, the Missouri saw action in the Pacific Theater, providing critical fire support during the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. It continued to serve in the Korean War, offering bombardment support and troop protection. After a brief decommissioning, the Missouri was modernised and recommissioned in 1986, serving in the Gulf War before its final decommissioning in 1992. Today, the USS Missouri is preserved as a museum ship at Pearl Harbour, serving as a symbol of peace and a reminder of the sacrifices made during the war.
