    History

The Sd.Kfz. 2, commonly known as the Kettenkrad, was a remarkable piece of military engineering developed by Germany during the Second World War. Its official designation, Sonderkraftfahrzeug 2, translates to "special purpose vehicle," reflecting its unique design and versatility. Introduced in 1940 and manufactured by NSU Motorenwerke AG, the Kettenkrad was essentially a hybrid vehicle combining features of a motorcycle and a tracked vehicle.

The Kettenkrad featured a front fork and handlebars like a motorcycle, but its rear was supported by tracked wheels, enabling it to navigate challenging terrains with ease. Initially designed for use by airborne units, it could be air-dropped with parachutes, making it invaluable for operations requiring rapid deployment and mobility in rugged conditions. It was powered by a 1.5-litre Opel Olympia engine, capable of reaching speeds up to 70 km/h on roads.

Throughout the war, the Kettenkrad was utilised in various roles including reconnaissance, cable laying, and as a towing vehicle for light artillery. Its robust design and adaptability meant it was also employed in agriculture and forestry after the war. Despite its primary military function, the Kettenkrad remains a fascinating example of innovative engineering, symbolising the technological advancements of its era.

    Reviews

"An exceptionally well-made model which is a good representation of the actual vehicle. Highly recommended." ~ Tim H.

"Very impressed with how this kit went together, looks the part and straight forward build. Only criticism is the tracks are really fidely and delicate, once you find the knack all goes well." ~ Ian H.
