History.

The raising of the flag on Iwo Jima is an iconic moment in World War II history. It occurred on 23 February 1945 during the Battle of Iwo Jima, a brutal fight between American and Japanese forces. Six U.S. Marines raised the American flag atop Mount Suribachi, symbolising a hard-fought victory. The moment was captured by Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal, whose image became one of the most famous war photographs ever taken. The photo inspired a sense of unity and patriotism, later serving as the basis for the United States Marine Corps War Memorial in Virginia. However, the battle continued for weeks after the flag raising, highlighting the immense cost of the Pacific campaign.
