History.
The Fiat G.55 Centauro was an Italian fighter aircraft developed during World War II by Fiat Aeronautica. Designed by Giuseppe Gabrielli, the G.55 first flew on April 30, 1942. It was part of the Serie 5 fighters, which also included the Macchi C.202 and the Reggiane Re.2005. Powered by a German Daimler-Benz DB 605 engine, the G.55 was renowned for its excellent performance, robust construction, and effective armament, which typically consisted of three 20 mm MG 151 cannons and two 12.7 mm Breda-SAFAT machine guns.
The Centauro entered operational service in 1943 and was considered one of the best Axis fighters of the war. It saw action primarily in the defense of Italy against Allied bombing raids. Despite its capabilities, production was hampered by Italy's difficult wartime economy and the subsequent armistice in September 1943. Only around 300 units were built.
Post-war, the G.55 continued to serve in the Italian Air Force and other countries' air forces, with some models even being exported to Argentina and Syria.
