History.
The F-4M Phantom II, designated FGR.2 in Royal Air Force service, was a British variant of the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. Developed in the late 1960s, it was tailored for UK requirements, featuring Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan engines for improved low-altitude performance, though at the cost of higher drag. The “FGR” designation stood for Fighter, Ground attack, and Reconnaissance, reflecting its multirole capabilities. Initially deployed with the RAF in 1969, it served in air defence and strike roles, replacing the English Electric Lightning in some squadrons. FGR.2 Phantoms operated extensively during the Cold War, including intercept missions from UK and German bases, until being replaced by the Tornado F3 in the early 1990s. Many survive today in museums and as gate guardians.
