History.

The Roman scorpio was a powerful torsion-powered siege weapon used by the Roman army from around the 1st century BCE. Similar to a large crossbow, it launched bolts or small projectiles with deadly accuracy, often used to target enemy troops, pick off commanders, or defend fortifications. Operated by a small team, the scorpio used twisted sinew cords to store energy, which was released to propel bolts at high speed. Its compact design made it highly mobile and effective both in sieges and on the battlefield. Julius Caesar famously used scorpios during his campaigns in Gaul and Britain. The weapon symbolised Rome’s advanced military engineering and contributed significantly to the success of Roman legions in expanding and securing the empire.
