History.
Germanic soldiers were tribal warriors from regions that now include Germany, Scandinavia, and the Low Countries. Known for their fierce independence and loyalty to their chieftains, they fought with spears, axes, and round shields, often forming tight-knit warbands. Early Germanic tribes like the Cherusci, under leaders such as Arminius, famously defeated Roman legions at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9 CE. Unlike the disciplined Roman legions, Germanic warriors valued individual bravery and close combat. As the Roman Empire declined, Germanic tribes such as the Visigoths, Vandals, and Franks formed new kingdoms across Europe. These soldiers laid the foundation for many medieval European armies, blending tribal traditions with Roman military influences over time.
