History.

The Roman gladiator schools, or *ludi gladiatorii*, were institutions where slaves, prisoners of war, and volunteers were trained to become gladiators, the fearsome fighters of ancient Rome. Established during the late Republic and flourishing under the Empire, these schools were vital in supplying the gladiatorial games with skilled combatants. The most famous of these schools was the Ludus Magnus, located near the Colosseum in Rome, which housed thousands of gladiators.

Training at these schools was rigorous and brutal, focusing on various fighting techniques, weapon skills, and physical conditioning. Gladiators were trained by experienced instructors known as *doctores*, often former gladiators themselves, who specialised in different styles of combat. Despite their harsh conditions, some gladiators gained fame and wealth, achieving celebrity status in Roman society. However, for most, the gladiatorial school was a place of oppression, where they were conditioned to fight and die for the entertainment of the masses.
