History.
The SU-100 is a Soviet tank destroyer that played a significant role during the latter stages of World War II. Developed in 1943, it was designed to replace the SU-85, which was rapidly becoming outdated against the increasing armour of German tanks. The SU-100's primary feature was its powerful 100 mm D-10S gun, which could effectively penetrate the armour of German Panther and Tiger tanks from considerable distances.
The vehicle was based on the T-34 medium tank chassis, which provided it with excellent mobility and reliability. The design process was swift, with the first prototypes ready by mid-1944. After successful trials, production began in September 1944 at the Uralmash plant. The SU-100 entered service just in time to participate in major offensives, such as the Vistula-Oder and Berlin operations.
Its combat performance was impressive, combining a potent gun with good manoeuvrability and armour protection. The SU-100 continued to serve in the Soviet Army and other Warsaw Pact forces well into the post-war period. It also saw action in various conflicts around the world, including the Korean War and the Arab-Israeli wars. The SU-100's legacy is marked by its significant contribution to the Soviet war effort and its continued use in the decades following WWII.
