History.
ORP Błyskawica is one of Poland’s most celebrated warships and the oldest preserved destroyer in the world. Built by J. Samuel White & Co. in Cowes, Isle of Wight, she was launched in 1937 before entering service with the Polish Navy. The ship’s connection with Cowes became especially significant during the Second World War. On the night of 4–5 May 1942, while undergoing repairs, Błyskawica helped defend the town from a German air raid, using her anti-aircraft guns to protect local residents and shipyards. Today, this remarkable act of courage is commemorated by memorials and annual ceremonies in Cowes, symbolising the enduring friendship between Poland and the Isle of Wight, forged through shared sacrifice and bravery.
