History.
The Volkswagen T3 Krankenwagen was an ambulance variant of the third-generation Volkswagen Transporter, produced between 1979 and 1992. Developed to meet European emergency service requirements, it featured a high roof, reinforced suspension and specialised medical interiors supplied by coachbuilders such as Binz and Miesen. The T3 Krankenwagen was widely used by German Red Cross units, fire brigades and hospital services, valued for its reliability, compact size and ability to operate in urban environments. Early models used air-cooled engines, later replaced by more efficient water-cooled petrol and diesel units. Available in both rear-wheel and Syncro four-wheel drive versions, the T3 ambulance also served in rural and mountainous regions. Many remained in service well into the 1990s.
