History.
The Roman camp tent, known as the papilio, played a vital role in the organisation of the Roman military. These tents were typically made from leather, often goatskin, and supported by wooden poles and ropes. Each Roman soldier carried a portion of the tent equipment, promoting shared responsibility and discipline. Tents were arranged in a strict, grid-like formation within the fortified camps (castra), reflecting Roman emphasis on order and strategy. The general’s tent, or praetorium, was centrally located and served as the command post. Roman tents evolved over time to suit various climates and terrains across the empire. Their design influenced later military encampments, laying the groundwork for temporary shelter systems still used by armies today.
