History.

The Cromwell Mk.IV, affectionately nicknamed 'Hela,' is a noteworthy variant of the British Cromwell tank, which saw extensive use during the Second World War. Developed in the early 1940s, the Cromwell tank was part of the Cruiser series and was designed to offer a balance between firepower, armour, and mobility. The Mk.IV version emerged as the most produced variant of the Cromwell, incorporating improvements from its predecessors and boasting enhanced battlefield performance.

'Hela' served with distinction in various theatres of war, contributing significantly to the Allied war effort. Its design featured a robust Rolls-Royce Meteor engine, derived from the famous Merlin engine used in Spitfires, providing the tank with impressive speed and agility. This made the Cromwell Mk.IV one of the fastest tanks of its time, capable of reaching speeds up to 40 mph on roads.

Equipped with a 75 mm dual-purpose gun, the Cromwell Mk.IV could effectively engage both armoured and soft targets, making it versatile in combat situations. Its armour, though not the thickest, was sloped to improve deflection of enemy fire. 'Hela' was part of the 7th Armoured Division, famously known as the "Desert Rats," and played a crucial role during the Normandy invasion and subsequent operations across Europe. The Cromwell Mk.IV 'Hela' remains a symbol of British engineering prowess and wartime resilience.
