History.

First used in action on 15 September 1916 during the Somme Offensive, Tank Mark I was the first tank in the world to enter combat. It was able to withstand machine gun and small-arms fire, cross trenches and difficult terrain, crush barbed wire and assault enemy positions as well as carrying supplies and troops. Developed by the British in 1915 as a means of breaking the stalemate of trench warfare, the main armament of the prototype ('Mother') was a 6-pounder (57 mm) cannon with two side-mounted Hotchkiss machine guns and later the Mark was divided into two subtypes: 'Female' had machine guns only and 'Male' (the original version) had the 6-pounder. 150 Mark Is were produced and considerably more (over 2,000) of its successors, Marks II-V. Production ceased at the end of the war.
