History.
The Panzer 38(t) Ausf E was a German light tank originally designed and built in Czechoslovakia as the LT vz. 38. Following Germany’s occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1939, the Wehrmacht adopted and improved the design, renaming it the Panzer 38(t). The Ausf E, introduced in 1940, featured enhanced armour protection and improved reliability. Armed with a 37mm KwK 38(t) gun and two 7.92mm machine guns, it was effective in early campaigns, including the invasions of Poland, France, and the early stages of Operation Barbarossa.
Despite its success, by 1942 it became obsolete against better-armoured Soviet tanks. However, its reliable chassis was repurposed for vehicles like the Hetzer tank destroyer. The Panzer 38(t) Ausf E remains a notable example of German adaptation of foreign armoured technology during WWII.
